Certification as an Accomplished Teacher of World Languages Other than English (WLOE)

The National Board for Professional Teaching Standards (NBPTS) offers National Board Certification (NBC) for teachers of World Languages Other than English (WLOE). The WLOE certification is designed to recognize accomplished teachers in the field. Candidates must hold a baccalaureate degree, have taught for a minimum of three years and have held a valid state teaching license for those three years or where a license is not required, have taught in schools recognized and approved to operate by the state. NBC Teacher Candidates must be teaching at least one class during the school year of their candidacy. The two certificates are Early and Middle Childhood/World Languages Other than English (EMC/WLOE) and Early Adolescence through Young Adulthood/World Language Other than English (EAYA/WLOE) .

Candidates for NBC as Teachers of WLOE are of three types:

  • PRE-CANDIDATES:
    University students in teacher preparation and practicing teachers until the time they officially become NBC Teacher Candidates.
  • CANDIDATES:
    Practicing teachers who are taking the necessary steps to participate in the NBC assessment process during the current school year.
  • ADVANCED CANDIDATES:
    NBC Teacher Candidates who did not achieve NBC in Year 1 and who bank scores for likely NBC in Year 2, and possibly Year 3.

    note: The NBC assessment process is a one to three year process.

  • Southwest Conference on Language Teaching (SWCOLT) Conference, Oklahoma City, Oklahoma - full-day workshop; candidate work session & co-presentation with Keith Cothrun of a familiarization session - 3-02
  • Central States Conference (CSC), Kansas City, Missouri - full-day workshop; candidate work session & familiarization session - 3-02
  • Northeast Conference on the Teaching of Foreign Languages (NECTFL), New York City, New York - full-day workshop & familiarization session - 4-02

During the 2002-2003 academic year, the NFLRC will co-sponsor presentations on NBC for Teachers of WLOE by Martie Semmer in collaboration with six state foreign language organizations.
