Working Groups of this New Visions task force are defining excellence –and finding successful examples— in the key areas of curriculum, assessment, materials, use of technology, reaching diverse student populations, program models, and articulation. Teachers and administrators will benefit from these practices, resources, models, and evaluation tools.

New Visions in Action: Teacher Recruitment And Retention

As part of New Visions, the profession identified the recruitment and retention of teachers as an area of critical concern. This session focuses on providing an overview of the initiatives currently underway by the Teacher Recruitment and Retention Task force and seeking input from the participants to inform and guide current and future work of the Task Force. Individuals who would like to collaborate or propose initiatives to be considered by the task Force are especially encouraged to attend this session.

Establishing a national Language Research Agenda

With the implementation of No Child Left Behind, how can we establish a research agenda that will support scientifically-based research on language learning and its benefits for all students all levels. A panel of experts will suggest approaches to establishing the agenda and supporting the needed research.

Professional Development: A National Priority
Presenters: Robert Terry, University of Richmond; Frank Medley, West Virginia University

Presenter will report on the results of a national survey conducted by the NFLRC at Iowa State University, and on professional development initiatives growing out of the New Visions Task Force on Professional Development. Transparencies, handouts, and discussion of data gathered by the survey will be shared by participants. Participants will have a greater awareness of a possible need for changes in our programs of professional development-both pre-service and in-service-and of the impact that standards, legislation, leadership, leaner characteristics, and other factors are having on the way professional development is viewed.
