July 18-20, 2002 (Part 1)

Dr. Ruth Borgman (Columbia University, New York City) clarifies a point about
the African Diaspora in the Caribbean.

Ruth Borgman works with a small group that is analyzing a text about the diaspora.

To model how to develop a thematic unit, Dr. Jossie O’Neill (New Visions for Public Schools, New York City) reads from a book she has reviewed in preparation for teaching a historical perspective.

Michele Montás (Manhattan Country School, New York City) presents the thematic web for the unit she developed collaboratively with Luz Cannon as a result of the institute, Temas Añejos: Recurring Themes in Ancient, Colonial, and Modern Latin America, held collaboratively at ISU by these same three institutions in 2000. Their unit is based on the book La peineta colorada.

Luz Canon (Winnetka, IL Public Schools) shows a participant a page in the handout on the unit she developed with Michelle Montás where the story from the book La peineta colorada is simplified.

With wig and puppets, three participants present a dramatization of a story they read together in the institute the day before.

Two participants use rhythm and drama to present the story they read the day before.

From left, Julie Kline (Center for Latin American and Caribbean Studies [CLACS], University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee) and Valerie McGinley Marshall (Stone Center for Latin American Studies [LARC], Tulane University) present children’s books that relate to the handout participants received on Children’s and Young Adult Literature resources available from CLACS. Previously Valerie had discussed resources on the African Diaspora in the Caribbean available from the LARC lending library.
