Day 3: Monday, July 1, 2002

Co-leader Dr. Doug Hartman (University of Pittsburgh) greets
participants and describes how he got involved in Action Research.

Luisa Forsgren (Morocco) describes concerns she has about her Action Research plan after working on it Sunday.

Doug Hartman discusses color coding of data as a first step in analysis of transcripts in response to the presentation by Action Research project collaborators Mark Warford (New York) and Margaret Rose (Virginia).

Richard Donato discusses establishing inter-rater reliability between collaborating
researchers by each separately identifying categories in transcripts and comparing
the results.

Marcia Rosenbusch (Iowa State University) introduces her Action Research project,
which involves using digital video clips of elementary school foreign language
classes with students in her elementary school foreign language methods course.

Elaine Phillips (Texas) describes her Action Research project, which addresses “What do standards look like when they get in the classroom?” Her project includes a meta-analysis that examines teacher’s participation in the project.

Dave Adkins (Iowa) will use his Action Research project to examine how ESL and Spanish students feel about the courses he teaches. Dave noted that he has reflected on the following in considering this project: “In seeking the truth, first prepare to handle it.”

Sharon Hahnlen (Virginia) describes the goal of her Action Research program evaluation project as resulting in students who are successful in their classes and student teaching experience.

Heather Hendry (Washington DC) seeks to discover the impact of an intensive
FLES program on the Spanish proficiency of third grade students through her
Action Research project.

In her Action Research project, Luisa Forsgren will examine teachers' management of time in a block schedule with middle school classes in an International school.
