CURRICULUM PHILOSOPHY:
It is the philosophy of the NFLRC Two-Way Immersion project that quality instruction must be supported with quality curriculum documents; design should support delivery. Therefore, good written curriculum documents must not only define what students are expected to master, but also offer suggestions to teachers on effective ways to approach that content. Quality formative assessments comprise another aspect of good written curriculum, while giving teachers solid feedback concerning individual student progress.
The Spanish Two-Way Immersion curriculum documents are the result of many hours of meeting with teachers and defining not only what students are to learn in the respective content areas, but also what students must master in the structures and functions of the languages themselves. In order to create a curriculum that goes beyond a list of goals and objectives, the TWI curriculum is organized by concept-based, student-centered units that encourage continuity of ideas and vocabulary for students and make learning not only cognitively challenging and intrinsically interesting, but personally relevant as well.
